Exclusion (of cover) (exclusion de garantie)
A situation, condition or activity explicitly excluded from a policy's cover, distinct from a waiting period (temporary) and from a deductible (an out-of-pocket amount, but still covered).
An exclusion of cover permanently removes certain events, conditions or activities from the scope of cover — for example a pre-existing condition identified in the medical questionnaire, the practice of so-called "at-risk" sports, or war zones. Unlike a waiting period, an exclusion does not lapse over time: the item concerned is simply never covered under that contract.
An exclusion must be stated clearly and legibly in the general terms to be enforceable against the policyholder; otherwise it can be challenged. It also differs from a deductible, which leaves an amount for the policyholder to bear but does not prevent the rest of the costs from being covered.
Example
A contract that excludes scuba diving will not reimburse any costs related to a diving accident, even though all the contract's other benefits otherwise apply normally.
