Every child counts, every local healthcare system is different: coverage for an expat family needs to follow all its members, not just the main policyholder.
Who it’s for
- Families moving abroad together
- Those expecting a child or considering a pregnancy abroad
One contract per person, or a single family plan
Depending on the insurer, a family can be covered by linked individual contracts or by a single family plan. The price depends on the age of each person to be insured — which is why the diagnostic asks for the number of people before showing an indicative price.
Maternity: a waiting period to plan for
Maternity coverage is almost always subject to a waiting period (often several months) before it takes effect: it must be taken out beforehand, not during or after the start of a pregnancy, to be covered.
School and health: two topics linked to moving abroad
Some international schools require proof of health insurance at enrolment — a point to check at the same time as choosing the school, not afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does CFE cover the whole family under a single membership?
A “family” membership exists for CFE plans, with a specific quarterly contribution per age bracket of the member — however, each dependant still needs to be explicitly attached to the file, it isn't automatic.
Does the maternity waiting period also apply to a child who is already born?
No: the maternity waiting period concerns coverage of the pregnancy and childbirth. Care for a child who is already born falls under the general waiting periods applicable to the contract, not a specific maternity waiting period.
Do I need a different insurance plan for each child?
Generally not: children are attached as dependants to an insured parent's contract, with a contribution that follows their own age bracket rather than a separate, standalone contract.
