Informational content — no offer yetRepatriation & Assistance
Medical repatriation organises and covers the cost of returning to a suitable care facility — or to France — in case of serious medical necessity. Assistance covers the support around that event: family, accommodation, formalities.
Who it’s for
- Any expat, regardless of status
- Those whose local healthcare system cannot treat certain serious conditions
- Families who want organised support in an emergency
Repatriation: a medical decision, not a personal choice
The decision to repatriate is made by the medical assistance team, based on the patient's condition and the care capacity available on-site — it is neither automatic nor the policyholder's own choice. The organisation (medical transport, medical escort if necessary) and its financial cost are what the guarantee covers. Not to be confused with medical evacuation — an emergency transport to the nearest suitable facility, which doesn't assume a return to France and can precede a repatriation once the patient is stabilised. Full detail in the glossary: medical repatriation.
What assistance generally covers
- Medical guidance and finding a suitable facility, 24 hours a day.
- Organisation and cost coverage of medical transport where necessary.
- Support for a family member or children in case of extended hospitalisation.
- Assistance in case of death abroad (formalities, repatriation of remains).
Why keep it even with good health insurance
Health insurance reimburses costs; an assistance guarantee organises an emergency response. The two meet different needs, and many expat health insurance contracts already include a base level of assistance — to be checked item by item before taking out a separate guarantee.

The Prévoyance and assistance guide also details death-and-disability benefits (daily allowances, disability, death lump sum), distinct from assistance but often offered together.
Frequently asked questions
Does CFE cover medical repatriation?
No: medical repatriation and assistance fall under a dedicated contract or component, never under CFE itself. A CFE member with no separate assistance guarantee is not covered in case of repatriation.
Does first-euro health insurance automatically include assistance?
Often, but not systematically: many expat health contracts include a base level of assistance and repatriation, but the level of cover (cap, covered zone, support for family members) varies from one contract to another and must be checked item by item.
Who decides that a repatriation is necessary?
The medical assistance team, never the policyholder alone, based on their state of health and the care capacity available on-site.
