Agent (MIA)

ORIAS “insurance intermediary agent” (MIA) category: an intermediary who distributes policies on behalf of another intermediary (broker, general agent, or insurance agent), and not directly on behalf of an insurer.

The insurance intermediary agent (MIA) acts under the responsibility of a principal who is itself already an intermediary registered with ORIAS — a broker, a general agent, or an insurance agent — and not under that of an insurance company directly. This category is distinct from that of the insurance agent (MA), who is mandated directly by an insurer.

For the client, what matters is knowing who remains ultimately liable: it is the MIA’s principal, whose name appears on the MIA’s registration record, publicly available on the ORIAS register, and not the MIA alone. Unlike a broker, a MIA’s registration file does not require its own professional liability insurance certificate: that of its principal covers the activity. A personal financial guarantee (at least €115,000 per year) is only required if the MIA itself collects funds on behalf of the insurer, which remains a regulated and limited practice for this category (ORIAS, MIA registration guide, September 2025).

Example

An agent registered in the MIA category can present policies on behalf of a broker who has appointed them, without being directly connected to the insurance company carrying the risk: it is the appointing broker who remains liable to the client.
