Voluntary affiliation
Joining a social security scheme on the insured person's own initiative, with no legal obligation, unlike the automatic affiliation of an employee in France.
The Caisse des Français de l’Étranger (CFE) works on this principle: no one is automatically covered simply by moving abroad — affiliation happens on the insured person’s own initiative, online or through a paper application. This is a key difference from the French general scheme, where an employee’s affiliation is automatic and requires no personal action.
Voluntary affiliation is not retroactive: it only takes effect from the date of the request (subject to the usual waiting periods), which makes acting quickly around the time of departure important.
Example
An employee who leaves to work in a country with no social security agreement with France must apply for voluntary affiliation to the CFE themselves: nothing is triggered automatically when they leave.
