Living in Tajikistan as a French National: Stay, Settling In, Safety and Daily Life
Key points
French nationals stay in Tajikistan without a visa for up to 30 days for a tourist stay; beyond that, the e-visa is requested online at evisa.tj, at USD 50 for single entry and USD 70 with access to the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region. France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry) classifies the Afghan border and the approaches to the Uzbek border as a red zone, recommends avoiding the southern border, in particular Khatlon, and places the rest of the country at heightened vigilance. The country is highly seismic, the road network mountainous, and the registration of foreigners is checked on departure. The French embassy in Dushanbe has no consular section: consular procedures come under the embassy in Tashkent.

Entry, Visas and Registration
According to France Diplomatie, French nationals do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 30 days. Beyond that, a visa is required: the application is made on the evisa.tj portal, which is also used for visas issued at an embassy or at the airport. The 90-day tourist visa allows a physical stay of no more than 60 days, and the passport must be valid six months after the date of application. The single-entry visa costs USD 50, and USD 70 with access to the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region (GBAO).
Foreigners staying in Tajikistan register with the Ministry of the Interior (OVIR service) within ten working days of arrival; exempt are holders of a tourist visa issued at the airport or of an e-visa, and stays of under ten working days. Failures are penalised at departure checks, at road border posts and at the airports of Dushanbe, Khujand and Kulob: the vehicle and its passengers may be held until the fine is paid, air passengers for up to several days, and the case goes before a district court that rules within 20 days; the penalty ranges from the fine, always due, to the fine accompanied by expulsion and a five-year ban on return (article 499 of the Code of Administrative Offences).
The special Gorno-Badakhshan permit is distinct from the visa: online with the e-visa (USD 70) or, for visa-free stays, with the OVIR in Dushanbe, Khujand, Bokhtar or Kulob. Motorists who entered by road file a temporary import declaration of USD 25, valid for 60 days. The border with Kyrgyzstan officially reopened after the delimitation treaty of 13 March 2025, with a single crossing open to all travellers. Foreign phones that accept a SIM card must be registered on entry, online on the site dedicated to the IMEI or in a shop. For employment-related permits, see the page working in Tajikistan.
Cities, Cost of Living and Housing
Dushanbe, the capital and the city where the French embassy, the banks, the exchange offices and the private health facilities are located, concentrates foreigners’ settling; Khujand, in the north, hosts an Alliance française created in 2022. Outside the large cities, services become scarcer: exchange offices are rarer in the other cities and regions.
The Statistics Agency under the President publishes prices and wages: average nominal monthly earnings are around 3,300 somoni. No official rent statistics were used for this page; housing is negotiated on recent listings. The up-to-date exchange, inflation and unemployment benchmarks appear in the “Economic indicators” block. In daily life, France Diplomatie states that payments are mostly made in cash, in somoni: cards work only in large international hotels and unreliably; euros and dollars are changed at Dushanbe airport, in banks and in exchange offices; a Visa card is preferable to a Mastercard.
Schooling and Cultural Life
According to the French embassy welcome booklet (2022 edition), there is no French school in Dushanbe: outside the Tajik public system, considered heavily degraded since the Soviet era, foreign international schools exist. Families also consider the CNED (French distance-learning service); the AEFE directory (aefe.gouv.fr; AEFE is the Agency for French Education Abroad) confirms the up-to-date situation. French remains a valued language: the embassy mentions nearly 800 French-speaking pupils and relies on the Bactria centre in Dushanbe and on the Alliance française of Khujand. An annual seminar for French teachers is held in Dushanbe.
Safety: Red Zones, Borders and Mines
The France Diplomatie map classifies as a red zone, formally advised against, the Afghan border, where it cites trafficking (drugs, human beings) and incursions by armed men, mainly in the south-east of Khatlon and on the road to Khorog, as well as the Uzbek border away from roads and crossing points, because of possible mines. It recommends avoiding the approaches to the southern border, in particular Khatlon. The rest of the country is at heightened vigilance, especially in places frequented by foreigners. Gorno-Badakhshan is a regulated zone whose access requires a special permit.
France Diplomatie recalls attacks by the Islamic State Khorasan in 2018 and 2019, the death of five employees of a Chinese company in Khatlon and incidents along the Afghan border. About 40 mined areas remain in the western and southern border regions, the Garm valley and along the Uzbek border; they are marked by a red triangle and the word “Mines”, and you must stay on the roads. The country is highly seismic, with avalanches, floods and major landslides in many mountain districts, especially during spring rains and snowmelt.
Traffic, Local Customs and Recommendations
France Diplomatie advises avoiding driving at night outside the large cities (poorly and sparsely lit roads, stray animals), not setting off alone on foot or by bicycle, travelling with guides who know the regions and never trying to avoid a check by the police, security services or army. Alcohol is strictly prohibited for drivers; winter requires fuel, chains and emergency equipment, and mountain roads remain closed for days. Shared taxis exist, with uncertain safety. The Safety page lists no local emergency number.
Tajikistan is a secular state with a mostly Muslim population: modest dress and respect for women are recommended; avoid nudity, shorts and going bare-chested, cover legs and shoulders in places of worship and, in rural areas, do not swim in swimwear near homes. It is advised not to show off large sums of money, not to walk alone at night in isolated areas, to register on Ariane and to report your presence to the embassy on arrival. The French embassy in Dushanbe (+992 93 500 57 55) has limited means in the event of a crisis; it can issue an emergency travel document, valid for a return to France only, and the embassy in Tashkent, competent for consular matters, handles identity and civil status documents (+998 71 232 81 00).
Health and Daily Life: Points of Attention
France Diplomatie describes limited healthcare facilities, with often insufficient sterilisation systems, and asks you to consult the embassy before using a hospital, doctor or dentist. For any serious procedure, medical evacuation to a third country is recommended, as no local hospital has advanced equipment (MRI, scanner). An assistance contract covering all medical costs, hospitalisation and medical repatriation is presented as essential. Malaria exists in certain regions from June to October, including Gorno-Badakhshan, Khatlon, Dushanbe and Khujand. How the system works is described on the page Tajikistan’s healthcare system, cover by status in healthcare reimbursement in Tajikistan and the general framework in the page health insurance in Tajikistan.
