Deductible (franchise)
The amount that systematically remains payable by the policyholder before the benefit kicks in, per claim or per period, as set out in the international health insurance policy.
In an international health insurance policy, the deductible is an amount set at subscription, below which no reimbursement is made. It applies either per claim (a given episode of care) or globally over a period — most often the insurance year — depending on what the policy provides for.
This contractual deductible is distinct from the French Social Security medical deductible (a regulatory mechanism specific to medication, paramedical procedures, and medical transport): the two concepts share the same name but do not belong to the same system. A higher deductible generally lowers the amount of the premium.
Example
A policy with an annual deductible of several hundred euros reimburses no care until that amount has been reached over the year, subject to any exceptions the policy may provide for.
