Living in Malawi as a French National: Cities, Formalities and Daily Life

Key points

Since 3 January 2026, Malawi has required an entry visa from French nationals: it is requested online on evisa.gov.mw or, since February 2026, obtained on arrival at the airport; the single-entry tourist visa costs 50 US dollars for a stay of three months in total. The country, of 118,484 km², has Lilongwe as its capital, with Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu as the main cities, and English and Chichewa as its languages. France Diplomatie (the French foreign ministry's travel advice service) places the whole territory under heightened vigilance because of road risk. There is no French embassy or consulate in Malawi: the Consulate General in Johannesburg is competent.

Strengths and Drawbacks of Life in Malawi

Malawi appeals for its lake, its massifs such as Mulanje and its wildlife parks. France Diplomatie presents a country with multiparty democracy since May 1994, where English is the official language with Chichewa the national language; English makes life easier for a French speaker.

  • Strengths: an English-speaking setting, nature (lake, Mulanje massif, wildlife parks considered safe by France Diplomatie), small-town life.
  • Points of caution: major road risk, very limited emergency assistance, a fragile health situation (the country has a very high HIV prevalence rate according to France Diplomatie), a little-diversified economy, GDP per capita of the order of 500 US dollars, one of the lowest in the world.
  • Consular isolation: no French embassy or consulate on the spot; the Consulate General in Johannesburg is competent.

The country has suffered recent climate shocks: Cyclone Freddy in 2023 caused more than 1,000 deaths, and the 2024 drought linked to El Niño weighed on agriculture. These benchmarks justify checking housing, water supply and electricity conditions before committing.

Cities and Regions Popular with French Nationals

Lilongwe is the administrative capital, where institutions and international organisations are concentrated. Blantyre, the economic capital, Zomba and Mzuzu are the other main cities indicated by France Diplomatie. The tourist sites on the lake (Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay, Cape Maclear) and at Zomba are particularly exposed to thefts according to the same source.

France Diplomatie recommends increased vigilance at night in Blantyre and Lilongwe (thefts, carjackings, assaults), not walking alone in working-class neighbourhoods and staying away from demonstrations. In the Mulanje massif (Sapitwa Peak, 3,002 m), weather changes are sudden and assaults have been reported: it is recommended to travel with a local guide whose reliability has been checked with the Mountain Club of Malawi.

The choice of city rests on employment, proximity to a care centre, the state of the roads and the safety level of the neighbourhood.

Cost of Living, Currency and Housing

The currency is the Malawian kwacha; the current rate and inflation appear in the “Economic indicators” block. GDP per capita is of the order of 500 US dollars and more than 20% of the population is food insecure: these benchmarks help in understanding the gaps in living standards between expatriates and the population.

No official average rent was read for this guide; housing budgets are compared on the spot with several landlords, with attention to access to water, electricity and the security of the home. The usual means of payment is foreign currency in cash, and credit cards (Visa, American Express) are generally accepted in hotels. A currency control is carried out on entry and on exit: exit is authorised up to the amount declared on arrival.

Residence Permits and Settling-In Formalities

Since 3 January 2026, an entry visa has been required of French nationals. The e-visa is requested on evisa.gov.mw (creating an account, form, photo and passport, card payment, receiving a PDF to print); since February 2026, French nationals can also board without a visa and obtain it on arrival at the airport, with the same documents. The documents requested for the host are an invitation letter, a copy of the company registration certificate (if applicable) and a copy of the residence permit.

The visa allows a stay of three months in total: 30 days on arrival, then an extension up to three months to be requested from immigration within the first 30 days. The rates are 50 US dollars for a single-entry transit or tourist/business visa, 150 US dollars for six months with multiple entries and 250 US dollars for twelve months.

Minors present the birth certificate, a copy of the parent’s passport and a consent form; if the person accompanying them is not a parent, proof of custody is requested. For a long stay, the residence permit falls to Malawian immigration and should be prepared several months before departure.

Schooling and Family Life

France Diplomatie gives no information on schooling in Malawi in its pages devoted to the country, and there is no French representation on the spot. Families ask the Consulate General in Johannesburg and the directory of the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) to learn of any options, and study local English-language schools, distance learning and admission conditions.

Children’s health requires up-to-date vaccinations (yellow fever if coming from an endemic zone, hepatitis, typhoid, tuberculosis for under-15s on a prolonged stay) and malaria prevention; see children’s cover abroad and expatriate family insurance.

Safety and France Diplomatie Advice

The whole territory is under heightened vigilance (yellow zone) because of road risk: Malawi is among the African countries with the most road accidents, with roads in poor condition, animals, pedestrians and cyclists, almost non-existent signage and lighting, broken-down lorries and unsignposted police roadblocks. Emergency roadside assistance there is very limited.

Thefts are frequent in crowded places (bus stations, markets), vehicle thefts mainly affect 4x4s, and caution is called for on the roads bordering Mozambique. It is advised not to travel at night outside built-up areas, to drive with windows closed and doors locked, to keep your passport and tickets in a safe place and to watch your luggage, as drugs may be hidden in it without the traveller’s knowledge.

On legislation, France Diplomatie reminds us that drunkenness at the wheel is severely punished (up to five years in prison), that drug use is punished by 10 to 20 years in prison and trafficking by 20 to 25 years, that buying raw precious stones is illegal, that photographing military installations, religious and government buildings, airports and bridges is prohibited, and that homosexuality is prohibited and criminally punished.

Transport and Daily Life

The road network is in poor condition, with potholes, and motorists’ driving is sometimes dangerous; it is advised to avoid minibuses, often poorly maintained and overloaded. An anti-theft system and suitable insurance are recommended for vehicles.

For health cover before settling in, the page expat health insurance presents the options, the healthcare system in Malawi describes the risks and reimbursements in Malawi details each status. Registering with Fil d’Ariane (the ministry’s alert service) makes it possible to receive the ministry’s alerts. Malawi is not on the CLEISS list (the French liaison centre for international social security) of States bound to France by a social security agreement.
